Intentional Hair Care: A Step by Step Guide to Shampooing and Conditioning Your Hair
Maintaining healthy hair starts with the right hair-washing routine. Here's a guide to help you get started:
1. Dry Brushing
The first step to any shampoo routine is dry brushing your scalp. This will loosen dirt and oil from your scalp as well as exfoliate any flakes to reduce build up.
2. Wet Your Hair
Next you’ll want to thoroughly wet all of your hair. Water is a key ingredient for the shampoo. It will help hydrate your hair, and create a lather.
3. Lather your shampoo
An important step that often gets missed is to lather the shampoo in your hands before applying to your scalp. The consistency should change from gel-like to a soft and foamy texture. Add extra water to your hands if needed. This will help your shampoo spread evenly.
4. Apply Shampoo
Begin by placing the emulsified shampoo to your scalp in different areas. This will ensure the product is evenly distributed. Place one hand at the top of your head and the other at the base of your head. Work your shampoo around to the sides above your ears.
Gently scrub your scalp with your fingertips, avoiding using your nails as it can cause micro tears. If your shampoo isn't lathering enough, add more water to your hair.
Rinse your hair thoroughly, ensuring no shampoo is left behind; this could potentially cause product buildup. If your hair is very dirty or oily, you may need to follow up with a second shampoo. The first shampoo will break down build up but not always get your hair clean. We recommend a second shampoo if you go three or more days between washes.
6. Apply Conditioner
Squeeze out some of the water left in your hair and emulsify the conditioner into your hands. Apply the conditioner starting from your ears down through the lengths of your hair. If you have a finer hair type, avoid applying directly to your scalp. Comb through your hair gently with a wide-tooth comb or Manta brush to ensure even distribution. Let the conditioner sit for a few minutes to soak in before rinsing it out completely.
Your hair should feel clean, hydrated and soft after these steps.
